To cheat or not to cheat? What do you think is best for your waistline and health? This is one of the biggest question asked in the health and fitness world.
When it comes to cheat meals some will say that once you start healthy eating it’s an All or Nothing mentality and others will encourage having days where you are not so strict with your diet. You also have the in-between people where they say anything is ok in moderation.
As a health coach I recommend sticking to a clean eating meal plan for the majority of the time. That being said, I also recommend indulging in a cheat meal once in a while. I believe the “everything in moderation” can work for some people but for most of us having daily access to unhealthy foods will lead to over consumption.
Scheduling your cheat meals is key. First because you don’t want your cheat meal to turn into a cheat day. When you schedule a cheat meal during the week you know exactly when you will be having it and you can still plan healthy meals around it. The second reason I recommend scheduling is to keep track. Often you end up saying you will have a cheat meal once in a while, which is fine, but if you are not keeping track of the amount it may start to creep up over time.
What I specifically like to do is to have one day per week where I treat myself. I like to keep it consistent as well. It gives me something to look forward to if I have a craving for something that doesn’t fit in my clean eating plan. Great examples are girl’s nights every Saturday, date night with your special someone, or maybe you like to have pizza and a movie on Sunday’s. . . The possibilities are endless when it comes to finding a day where you can indulge, trust me!
On days where you know you will have a cheat meal try to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, especially if it involves alcohol. Try being active that day so the calories go to good use.
To summarize, clean eating is important for your health but you may end up going crazy if you never ever have your favourite foods again. Figure out what is worth it and not, and treat yourself once in a while. Just don’t forget to plan ahead and eat well around it.
